Torque Motors and High-Torque Motors: Definition and Applications

What is a Torque Motor?

A torque motor is an electric motor designed to operate at low speeds and typically in direct drive without a gearbox. These motors are particularly used in applications requiring high precision, such as cyclical production machines, where acceleration, constant speed, deceleration, and sometimes reverse motion are crucial. This distinguishes them from motors intended for continuous operation machines, which deliver constant power at a fixed speed.

Why Use a Torque Motor?

Traditionally, automation machines and machine tools used high-speed electric motors coupled with gearboxes to:

  • Reduce the motor speed.

  • Increase torque to meet the machine’s axis requirements.

However, these gearboxes pose several issues, including:

  • Increased maintenance.

  • Reduced reliability.

  • Loss of precision and backlash.

  • Audible noise.

  • Energy efficiency loss.

To overcome these limitations, machine manufacturers are turning to permanent magnet torque motors, which offer high torque and enable direct transmission without a gearbox. This solution improves precision, reliability, and overall performance of automated axes.

Types of Torque Motors

  • DC Torque Motors.

  • Multi-phase AC Torque Motors.

Applications of Torque Motors

Torque motors, particularly the three-phase permanent magnet models like the ALXION ST and STK, are increasingly adopted in various sectors:

  • Industrial automation.

  • Machine tools.

  • Off-site automation.

These motors are valued for their technical, economic, and ergonomic advantages, making them adaptable for various uses both inside and outside factories.

Advantages of Torque Motors

  • Increased reliability due to the absence of a gearbox.

  • Improved precision for automated axes.

  • Reduced maintenance costs.

  • Better energy efficiency.

Conclusion

Torque and high-torque motors represent a significant advancement in direct drive technologies, eliminating the constraints associated with gearboxes. Their adoption continues to grow in sectors that require precision, reliability, and high performance.
